1. Only 4 more weeks off to the 30th Anniversary

Marathon 2003

In four weeks the 30th real,- BERLIN MARATHON will already be (sport)

history and you were part of it! You will know then if all of your preparation

was correct or what you did wrong.

In Berlin the organisers from SCC-RUNNING are now making the final and

really final preparations. On Sunday there was a traditional cult run that has

been known for years as the "Only 4 more weeks to the

BERLIN-MARATHON", which drew 132 Berliners last year for an easy training

through the Grunewald Forest. Yesterday there were, believe it or not, 1,068

participants!!! The conclusion made by SCC-RUNNING: The Berliners are taking

their preparation for the anniversary marathon on September 27-28, 2003

seriously.

We hope you are, too. You should use the last few weeks before the running

event well, to prepare yourself seriously both in training form and health for

the adventure of the big loop through Berlin. You should get advice about the

correct clothing and shoes from experienced runners and you should definitely

consult an experienced doctor for a thorough check-up.

That is our main priority: You should run through the Brandenburg Gate in

good health with a smile on your face about 300 metres further the medals and

photographers are waiting for you at the finish!

The inline skaters will start this year on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. on the

boulevard Strasse des 17. Juni. The skaters course differs slightly from the

original course of the runners. The finish is on Pariser Platz (in front of the

Brandenburg Gate). As the limit of participants has not been reached, the

registration deadline has been moved back one week to September 5, and the fee

has not been raised. Your colleagues, friends can register easily at

->http://www.berlin-marathon.com/events/oa

The runners are very welcome to get a closer look at the skaters and cheer

them on during their race. This is the first time that will be possible, as in

previous years the skaters were already across the finish when the runners had

not yet reached the 10 km mark.

The preparations of the TV station ARD are also going full throttle: your

friends can watch Germany s largest and most important marathon spectacle live

on TV (ARD) from 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Spread the word and programme your

VCR. We wish you (and us) good preparation in the last 4 weeks before the

race.

Your SCC RUNNING Team

2. Doctors-Charity Run for Multiple Sclerosis

There is a special event for the 30th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON for the doctors

participating in the race.

As in the years before, the company Schering AG is giving 100 EUR to the

German Multiple Sclerosis Society for each doctor who successfully finishes the

real,- BERLIN-MARATHON.

All colleagues who would like to participate should contact Prof. Dr. med.

C. D. Reimers, Klinik für Neurologie, Sächsisches Krankenhaus,

3. MarathonFoto The official photo partner again this

year!

The real,- BERLIN-MARATHON is happy to have MarathonFoto as the official

marathon photographer again this year. MarathonFoto has 20 years of experience

in the area of sport photography, and as a pioneer in photo-online-ordering,

they operate completely digitally. The participants of last years real,-

BERLIN-MARATHON praised the quality of the photos, the speed with which they

were available online, and the simplicity of ordering online.

As an extra bonus for the participants in the inline skate marathon 2003,

the MarathonFoto team will also be on the course taking pictures of the inline

skaters this year, too.

On the day of the marathon, MarathonFoto will be present with 30

photographers at 10 points along the course and will be documenting the

experience of the 30th real,- BERLIN- MARATHION for you with over 100,000

pictures. In order for MarathonFoto to be able to take good photos of you and

to get them on the internet as fast as possible, please wear your race number

so that it can be seen easily on your chest - or for the skaters - on your

helmet (separate stickers will be in your race bag) and thigh.

On Saturday, October 4, 2003, you will be able to view and order your photos

at www.marathonfoto.com. To log in, just enter your last name and race

the real,- BERLIN -MARATHON sent to your mobile phone. The message will be sent

by SMS only seconds after the finish! The free service, in which participants

can supply up to 3 mobile phone numbers and one email address to which the

results of a specific race number will be sent, is again being offered by the

Institute for Practical Informatics of the University of Linz, under the

leadership of Prof. Ferscha.

"We are pleased to be able to give a special treat again this year for

the event of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON especially as we expect to send the

100,000th message per SMS at this anniversary event", says Prof.

Ferscha.

Registration is possible starting on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at ->

www.berlin-marathon.com- look for the mobile telephone icon on the homepage.

But hurry the number of messages that can be registered is limited.

5. Medical Studies at the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON Again

this year there will be several medical studies relating to the real,- BERLIN-

MARATHON in which the active athletes can participate.

The real,- BERLIN-MARATHON, the Department of Sport Medicine of the Humboldt

University, BAS and the SMS are looking for volunteers to participate in

various studies:

-> Who wants to know what his/her personal dehydration level is when

running?

Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about drinking during physical

activity. News reports about the necessary liquid intake have been circulating

in the USA, stating that runners often drink too much.

Since the need for liquids can differ significantly from person to person,

we would like to give you the opportunity within the framework of a study to

find out your own level of hydration necessary. For this study, 1000

participants in the 30th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON --500 men and 500 women-- are

needed. The study is being carried out together with the Department of Sport

Medicine of the Humboldt University.

What does participation involve? All you have to do is be weighed directly

before and after the marathon. The weighing will take place in the start and

finish area. You also have to note the amount of liquids consumed during the

race. Furthermore you will need to fill out a questionnaire about your training

and about any complaints you had during the race. The time necessary is

minimal.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please register at:

sportmedizin@berlin-marathon.com. The study is possible through the friendly

support of the Berlin Water Works.

6. Charity Partnership with the German Agro Action

(Welthungerhilfe)

For the second time, the German Agro Action (Deutsche Welthungerhilfe) will

be at the start on September 27 + 28, 2003, as the charity partner of the

real,- BERLIN-MARATHON. The aim of the partnership with the event organiser

SCC-RUNNING is to help people in Iraq and in the running nation Ethiopia

through sport. Last year the fantastic sum of 35,000 EUR was collected for

charity. This year through the marathon registrations, more than 20,000 EUR has

already been collected for post-war Iraq by the participants.

Two projects - a common goal

The charity money collected in 2003 under the motto "United we run for

Life" will be used for the Iraqi and Ethiopian aid projects of the German

Agro Action. The Ethiopia project of German Agro Action has as its primary goal

lasting and long-term assistance in the communities around Butajira (about 140

km south of the capital Addis Abeba). To achieve this goal, the German Agro

Action and the Ethiopian Rural Community Water Development Organisation (COWDO)

have been working together for the past ten years. COWDO provides water for

families and villages. In 2003, a further 2,400 people are to receive clean

drinking water. The aid includes building a new well, the organisation of an

independent local water committee for self-help, the training of local water

technicians, as well as hygiene counselling. Visible successes can already be

seen. Most of all, women and girls are profiting from the project. Through the

improvements in the water supply, their daily workload has been greatly

reduced. Especially the girls now have time for their schooling.

A sporting means for active contribution

The organisers of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON and the German Agro Action are

convinced that an especially active contribution is possible through sport. For

this reason, they would like to make an appeal to support these projects. The

runners can either get sponsors by the km or minute, or one can make donations

directly to the German Agro Action project
