Japan’s love affair with Marathon running, both the individual race and the Ekiden team relay equivalent is recognised the world over. Similar to Greece the country which gave birth to the Marathon concept, Japan offers a spiritual home for this unique long distance discipline. Therefore it is of no surprise that last summer’s Olympic women’s Marathon victory by Mizuki Noguchi was rapturously greeted by the nation at a level which is difficult for the rest of the world to comprehend.
